The Sunderdhunga valley harbors a number of medicinal plants used by the local people in different purposes. A total of 76 ethnomedicinal plants have been enumerated in the present communication with correct binomials, family, life form, local name along with detailed ethnomedicinal uses. These species belong to 27 families and 56 genera. Out of total species recorded, 82% belongs to only 11 families, on the other hand 48% of total families represented by single species. Fifteen of the recorded species are categorized under different threat category, constituting about 20% of total species. Major cause of depletion of these species is over exploitation of the wild populations and illegal trade. Important measures required to conserve the biodiversity of the valley include documentation of the traditional ecological and remedial knowledge of the locals for sustaining future generation and motivation to cultivate rare or threatened species in nearby villages.Keywords

The present paper deals with the invasive alien plants found in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. A total number of 125 invasive alien species under 83 genera, belonging to 39 families have been recorded based on field observations, herbarium and literature consultation. Tropical American elements contribute 75% of alien species found in the state. Among the invasive, annuals comprise 63%, herbs constitute 79% and only four tree species recorded as invasive species. Invasive species based habitat shows that 44% of invasive species were most abundant in wasteland, while cultivated fields, roadsides and forests were preferred by 20, 16 and 9% species respectively. Among the invasive alien elements, 70 species (56%) are being used by local inhabitants for different medicinal uses. Early detection and monitoring of naturalized weeds are essential for better control.Keywords

Cellular manufacturing system (CMS) is the application of Group Technology (GT) in which similar parts and machines are grouped into part families and machining cells. The success of the CMS depends on the efficiency in forming part families and manufacturing cells. In this work, a back propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is developed for the above task. Learning (i.e.) adjustment of weight age to each connection in the network is incorporated using Genetic algorithm (GA). Multiple objectives (Exceptional elements, Intracell move. Intracell machine load unbalances. Intercell machine load unbalances) are considered to evaluate the goodness of the cell formation. Mountain ecosystems are globally important as centres of biological diversity and they are receiving increasing priority on global conservation agenda1. The Himalaya is recognized as one of the global biodiversity hotspots in view of its rich, unique biodiversity and vulnerability to perturbations. The goods and services emanating from this ecosystem are vitally important for ecological and economic security of a major part of the Indian subcontinent. Despite its global importance, the Himalaya is considered as a data-deficient region2. Recognizing the significance of the Himalaya as an important biological hotspot, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India (GoI) launched the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) as a Central Sector (CS) Grant-in-Aid Scheme in late 2015, with a vision to support the sustenance and enhancement of the ecological, natural, cultural and socio-economic capital assets and values of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR).Full Text

The present study was carried out to assess floristic diversity, community composition and regeneration status of different forests in Nanda Devi National Park after prohibition of human activities in 1983 with a view to understand the impact of ban, and provide a basis for assessing subsequent changes on plant diversity and composition. The comparison of the present study with the earlier studies conducted in 1993 and 2003, indicated positive changes on plant diversity, forest composition and ecological conditions of the National Park. A total of 409 taxa belonging to 203 genera and 71 families (377 Angiosperms, 7 Gymnosperms and 25 Pteridophytes) were documented from the National Park. Two types of forest communities, i.e. Betula utilis along timberline, and mixed forest of Abies spectabilis with B. utilis form the dominant forests inside the National Park. Proportionate distribution of individuals in seedling, sapling and tree layers showed considerable variation in the population structure of different communities. Maximum species richness was observed in Dibrugheta (128) followed by Dharansi (43) and Sarsopatal (34) among the studied alpine meadows of this National Park. The present results could be a pilot to strengthen conservation measures across the Protected Area Network by understanding the impact of the ban on anthropogenic activities, and is also useful for future assessment of floristic diversity and forest composition in the National Park.Keywords

Long-term experiments are essential in understanding the ecological consequences of global land use and climate change. Further, it is well established that long-term data sets are prerequisites for effective management of forest resources and biodiversity conservation. In view of this, the present study attempts to contribute to major global long-term ecological monitoring (LTEM) networks and the status of LTEM studies in India with a special focus on Indian Himalayan Region. Over the last 40 years, around 103 countries from the America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia have been engaged in LTEM studies on various aspects of biodiversity, monitoring and predicting climate change impacts in a range of ecosystems, including the mountains. The temporal distribution of past studies on the subject shows a gradual increasing pattern (3 papers in 1992) with a peak during 2021 (105 papers). The established LTEM networks across the globe provide a significant empirical basis for understanding ecosystem structure and dynamics. Literature indicates plenty of permanent monitoring plots from India, mostly from southern India, and their significant contribution to ecosystem understanding. Himalayan regions are important sites for monitoring biological and socio-ecological responses to environmental perturbations, including climate change. LTEM studies are lacking in the IHR; only a few sites have been established, mostly in alpine ecosystems. This review identifies research gaps, opportunities with respect to LTEM studies, and the possibilities for strengthening long-term research and observation in India in general and the Himalaya in particular.Keywords
